Origins
Bariki comes from Arabic verbs for blessing: بَرَّكَ (barraka, “to invoke a blessing”) or بَارَكَ (bāraka, “to bless”). Both are recorded as possible source forms. You can hear the Swahili verb in Tanzania’s national anthem, Mungu ibariki Afrika (“God bless Africa”).
