Origins

Kubwa may have developed from Swahili -kuu together with an expressive element, -bwa. In this proposed history, -kuu goes back to the reconstructed Proto-Bantu form *-kʊlʊ HH. Makonde -kulungwa, “big”, offers a comparison, but the exact derivation of kubwa remains uncertain.
