pia
adverb
also; too.
Use pia to add another person, thing or action. It can follow a pronoun or appear later in a clause.
Origins
Pia has a long record in Swahili. Nineteenth-century usage includes “entirely” and “all”; by the early twentieth century it is also documented as “also”, with a wider range of positions than na.
Charles Sacleux, Grammaire des dialectes Swahilis (1909), 344.
Unlike na, pia can occur after a verb as well as with a pronoun. Pia is recorded for entirely/all in 1884 and also in 1909.
Edward Steere, A Handbook of the Swahili Language as Spoken at Zanzibar (1884), 401.
