ako
copula

Lyric usage
Origins
Sheng uses ako with the regular class 1 agreement marker a- where Standard Swahili uses irregular yu- in the corresponding locative form. The evidence establishes this present-day grammar, not a historical origin.
Hannah Gibson, Chege Githiora, Fridah Kanana Erastus, and Lutz Marten, Morphosyntactic retention and innovation in Sheng (John Benjamins Publishing Company, 2024), section 4.1; printed 29.
Explains the regular class 1 agreement in ako and documents its locative and ako na possessive constructions.
Benson Oduor Ojwang, Reclaiming Urban Youth Identity through Language in Kenya: The Case of Koch FM Radio (Africa Development, 2017), printed 22.
Provides a published Sheng example of ako followed by a description: ako poa.
