Marahaba answers Shikamoo, and together they make a highly formal greeting of respect, especially associated with Tanzania and with native Swahili speakers on the Kenyan coast. Elsewhere in Kenya you may meet it mainly in classroom Swahili. Older sources also record marahaba for thanks, welcome, pleasure, and approval; how common those uses are today is uncertain.

Origins
Marahaba came into Swahili from Arabic مَرْحَبًا (marḥaban), a word associated with welcome and well-wishing. Swahili gave it a familiar home in the respectful exchange with Shikamoo. Older sources show it ranging wider, covering thanks, welcome, pleasure, and approval. Those senses are historically attested; how often they are used today is not established.
